Split House is a renovation to a villa in the Auckland suburb of Sandringham. The project involved the design of a new addition that steps gradually through three split levels down to create an easy connection from the living spaces to the landscape. The lofty spaces are enclosed within two dynamic split hip roofs, sarked in cedar and punctuated with high-level windows. A faceted timber screen provides sun shading, while also revealing its colour as one walks across the back yard. The new addition provides a new kitchen, bathroom, living room, media room, dining room and even a purpose-designed ‘G&T nook’. Each space incorporates a large amount of bespoke built-in cabinetry in walnut and warm lighting.Save this picture!© Simon DevittSave this picture!PlanSave this picture!© Simon DevittBeneath the primary living spaces, a cellar and bike workshop were also incorporated. The retained heritage fabric of the original villa was also restored using international best practice heritage techniques and principles, while also increasing its performance with all new insulation, central heating, rainwater harvesting system, grey water system and electrical upgrade.Save this picture!© Simon DevittThis warm family home reflects a contemporary way of living together for a young family, while responding to the geological and topographical character of the site. Both the house and garden are larger and more usable due to the project. This is achieved by carefully relocating the carport to reduce the length of the driveway on the site and reforming the topography across the back of the site.Save this picture!© Simon DevittThe project is the first work created using the design tools generated through the creative practice PhD research of the architects. Fundamental themes developed through this research and applied in this project are: A topographic approach to planning which involves the axonometric drawing of the project at every stage of the design process. Scenographic design which sets up diagonal views and passage through orthogonal spaces, from one part of the program to another, through specifically designed frames. Design of devices that deceive the eye and reveal another optical understanding of space. By employing these ideas in the design, the Split House aims to create spaces which are both visually linked, but carefully composed as individual spaces in their own right.Save this picture!© Simon DevittProject gallerySee allShow lessAD Classics: Walden 7 / Ricardo BofillArchitecture ClassicsHouse No. 47 / DRTAN LM ArchitectSelected Projects Share New Zealand Photographs:  Simon Devitt Manufacturers Brands with products used in this architecture project 2019 Architects: Pac Studio Area Area of this architecture project Houses Save this picture!© Simon Devitt+ 19Curated by Paula Pintos Share Split House / Pac Studio read more

Improvements Planned For Shrewsbury’s Manson Park

first_imgBy John BurtonSHREWSBURY – Expect to see some changes to the borough’s Manson Park in 2016.The Borough Council plans to take advantage of a county-awarded $104,000 grant to cover some of the costs of renovations and constructing some additional amenities at the park.Mayor Donald Burden said the Borough Council debated the needs expressed by the borough Parks and Recreation Commission and the possible configurations for the various offerings at the park. The council will move forward with it but is awaiting an environmental report from borough engineer David Cranmer.Manson Park is located on borough property that also contains the municipal complex/police headquarters at the intersection of Broad Street (State Highway 35) and Sycamore Ave. The approximately 20-year-old park encompasses several acres and features a Little League baseball/softball field, soccer field, walking trail and the community garden. Borough officials would like to construct two basketball courts and add fitness stations along the path, expand the path and do some general renovations to the existing features, said Cranmer.Cranmer is working on the environmental report to determine if the location has any wetlands or other environmental considerations that would have to be taken into account for the project to move forward. In addition, Cranmer said he and other officials have been working with the recreation commission for several months “to come up with a plan that met everyone’s needs and serves the borough.”The borough plans to add basketball courts and fitness stations. Photo: John BurtonConsolidating outlets for the recreation programs and activities would be beneficial given there is sufficient parking at the site. “They’ll be able to accommodate multiple activities there,” Burden said.“I think it’s fair to say the entire council is trying to be responsive to the recreational needs of the entire community,” the mayor said. “We want to have something for everybody.”The borough was notified last December it had been awarded the county Municipal Open Space Grant. It is a matching grant, Cranmer said. The entire project is expected to be a “in the $200,000 range,” Burden said. The council expects to award the bids by next spring and begin construction shortly thereafter, the officials said.“We want to maximize construction to be compatible with the weather,” Burden said.last_img read more

India vs Australia: KL Rahul receives praise from umpire for sportsman spirit

first_imgKL Rahul received praise from umpire Ian Gould for his honesty and prompt reaction after he attempted to take a catch in Ravindra Jadeja’s over early on Day 3 of the fourth Test against Australia at the Sydney Cricket Ground (SCG) on Saturday. With an overnight score of 24/0, Australia came out to bat and Marcus Harris took on the attack immediately. In the fifth over of the day, Kohli brought Jadeja into the attack and Harris tried to have a go at him in the first delivery itself. He mistimed the shot and the ball went towards mid-on.Rahul made a full-stretched dive trying to take a catch but after collecting the ball, immediately signalled in negative towards the umpire Gould. The ball had not carried towards him and he fell just short of the catch despite a brilliant effort. Here’s how it happened -R Jadeja to Harris, Chance! Falls just short and Rahul signals immediately that the ball has bounced in front of him! A really good effort that, but it just did not carry. Loops this one outside off, Harris comes down the track and looks to loft it over mid on but can only lift it as far as to the right of mid on. Rahul moves to his right, dives to take this one but just can’t reach the ball. Stands up and immediately says that it had gone to ground. Harris survives a scare. As soon as Rahul signalled to the umpire, the over was good to continue without any confusion and the Karnataka opener received a pat on his head from teammate Jasprit Bumrah.A good effort from Rahul and he immediately says it bounced. Great stuff. Umpire Gould a big fan of it #CloseMatters#AUSvIND | @GilletteAU pic.twitter.com/7nA0H5Lsc7cricket.com.au (@cricketcomau) January 4, 2019Umpire Gould also immediately gave a thumbs up to Rahul and after the end of the over, he called out to Rahul to praise again. Through the stump mic, Gould could be heard saying, “Hey Rahul, great job mate. Good on you.”last_img read more
