Big Walker Cup semis at Constant Spring

first_imgFirst-time Walker Cup semi-finalists, Haile Selassie High, will look to continue their Cinderella run when they face Jamaica College (JC) in the Inter-Secondary Schools Sports Association (ISSA)/FLOW knockout competition at Constant Spring Complex today. Kick-off time is 3 p.m. The game is one of a double-header, with the opener featuring Kingston College (KC) and Bridgeport High, set to start at 1 p.m. Geoffrey Maxwell has been creating waves with Haile Selassie and after an impressive performance in which they beat Excelsior High 6-5 in a penalty shootout last Saturday, he is confident of beating another traditional top schoolboy team. “It is going to be a very competitive game. I have a fair idea of what to expect from JC. We have to play our game and counter them,” Maxwell told The Gleaner yesterday. “They know what they can achieve, and we are pretty confident that we can win the game and advance to the final,” added the former Jamaica player and coach. Haile Selassie’s top players include captain Ricardo Phipps, Akeem Grandison, Hamish Smith and Chase Knight. Miguel Coley, JC’s head coach, said Haile Selassie is a dangerous team. “They (Haile Selassie) have been playing good football, so we are looking forward to a tough game tomorrow,” Coley said. “It is a semi-final game so the winner will go to the final. We are ready for anything,” he also said. JC will rely on captain Oquin Robinson, Ronaldo Brown, Donovan Dawkins, Maliek Howell and Duhaney Williams. In the first game, red-hot KC are fancied to get the better of Bridgeport. Under the guidance of Ludlow Bernard, KC have been scoring heavily this season, so they have enough firepower to push Bridgeport on the back foot and take the game. The KC key players include Rashawn Mackison, Travonne Reid and Fabian Grant. Bridgeport, on the other hand, have a young team that could create a huge upset on the day.last_img read more

House narrowly renews Patriot Act for president to sign before Friday

first_img AD Quality Auto 360p 720p 1080p Top articles1/5READ MORECasino Insider: Here’s a look at San Manuel’s new high limit rooms, Asian restaurant That issue helped fuel a two-month Senate filibuster that forced the White House to accept some new restrictions on information gathered in terrorism probes. Republicans on Tuesday declared the legislative war won, saying the renewal of the act’s 16 provisions along with new curbs on government investigatory power will help law enforcement prevent terrorists from striking. “Intense congressional and public scrutiny has not produced a single substantiated claim that the Patriot Act has been misused to violate Americans’ civil liberties,” said House Judiciary Committee Chairman James Sensenbrenner, R-Wis. “Opponents of the legislation have relied upon exaggeration and hyperbole to distort a demonstrated record of accomplishment and success.” “The president looks forward to signing the bill into law,” said White House spokeswoman Dana Perino. But the debate over the balance between a strong war against terrorists and civil liberties protections is far from over. WASHINGTON – The House renewed the USA Patriot Act in a cliffhanger vote Tuesday night, extending a centerpiece of the war on terrorism at President George W. Bush’s urging after months of political combat over the balance between privacy rights and the pursuit of potential terrorists. Bush, forced by filibuster to accept new curbs on law enforcement investigations, is expected to sign the legislation before 16 provisions of the 2001 law expire Friday. The vote was 280-138, just two more than needed under special rules that required a two-thirds majority. The close vote caught senior Republican aides in both chambers by surprise. Sen. John Sununu, R-N.H., the sponsor of the new civil liberties protections, worked the House floor as representatives cast their votes. Nonetheless, the vote marked a political victory for Bush and will allow congressional Republicans facing midterm elections this year to continue touting a tough-on-terror stance. Bush’s approval ratings have suffered in recent months after revelations that he had authorized secret, warrantless wiretapping of Americans. The Senate Judiciary Committee is holding hearings on the domestic wiretapping program. Additionally, Chairman Arlen Specter, R-Pa., the chief author of the Patriot Act renewal, has introduced a new measure “to provide extra protections that better comport with my sensitivity of civil rights.” Despite its passage, the Patriot Act still has staunch congressional opponents who protested it by voting no even on the part of the bill that would add new civil rights protections. During the Senate’s final debate last week, Sen. Russell Feingold, D-Wis., said he was voting no because the new protections for Americans were so modest they were almost meaningless. Such objections echoed during the House debate Tuesday, where the measure was supported by 214 Republicans and 66 Democrats and opposed by 13 Republicans, 124 Democrats and one Independent. “I rise in strong opposition to this legislation because it offers only a superficial reform that will have little if any impact on safeguarding our civil liberties,” said Rep. Dennis Kucinich, D-Ohio. For now, Bush will be signing a package on which members of both chambers of Congress and the president can agree. 160Want local news?Sign up for the Localist and stay informed Something went wrong. Humble Bundle Launches Another Pay-What-You-Want Video Game Deal

first_imgThe folks behind the Humble Indie Bundle, one of the great pay-what-you-want success stories of this year, are offering their second bundle of games today – 5 more DRM-free games, priced at what you want to pay with the option to donate some of that contribution to charity.Pay-what-you-want has become an interesting alternative business model online, with bands like Radiohead demonstrating that it can be an even more successful than traditional pricing. Of course, not everyone can generate quite that buzz, and a recent study pointed to another option if you can’t command rockstar attention for your pay-as-you-want endeavor: combine it with a voluntary payment to charity.Perhaps that’s what helped the first Humble Indie Bundle be such a success this spring. Almost 140,000 contributors shelled out nearly $1.3 million for the indie game developers, with $400,000 earmarked for charity. “We were blown away by the success of the first Humble Indie Bundle,” says co-founder John Graham, “so we decided it would be a shame if we didn’t try to do it again.” Related Posts Tags:#gaming#web 5 Outdoor Activities for Beating Office Burnout 9 Books That Make Perfect Gifts for Industry Ex… audrey watters This second bundle includes 5 different games – critically-rated puzzle game Braid, point-and-click adventure game Machinarium, puzzle game Osmos, action game Cortex Command and a new real-time strategy game (launching as part of the bundle) Revenge of the Titans. The games are DRM-free and work across platforms; there are Windows, Mac and Linux versions of all 5 games, with Braid and Cortex Command making their Linux debut in the bundle. (A good thing, as Linux users contributed twice as much as Windows users last time around.) When you purchase the games, you can set your price, then allocate how much of that goes to the game developers, how much to charity, and how much is a “tip” for the Humble Bundle itself (as Humble Bundle doesn’t have one of its own games in this package). The charities remain the same as they did the first time around: the Electronic Frontier Foundation and Child’s Play. And if the study about charity donations improving a pay-as-you-want campaign is right, then that’s a boon to this second endeavor. Humble Bundle, which has just been accepted into Y Combinator‘s incubator program, hopes to repeat its previous success. According to Graham, “It could be that we just got really lucky, but we think it might be something more substantial, that if you treat your customers well by not imposing onerous DRM on them and supporting Mac OS X and Linux (supporting Mac and Linux literally doubled our revenue last time) they will treat you well too.” After all, it’s not terribly difficult to find BitTorrents of games and download them for free, no matter the price that game makers set. So with the Humble Bundle, you get to set your own price, download great games, and support both indie game developers and charities at the same time. 4 Keys to a Kid-Safe App 12 Unique Gifts for the Hard-to-Shop-for People…last_img read more

Akhilesh Yadav to contest Lok Sabha poll from Kannauj; Mulayam from Mainpuri

first_imgSamajwadi Party president Akhilesh Yadav on Monday indicated that he would contest the 2019 Lok Sabha election from Kannauj.  Mr.  Yadav’s wife Dimple Yadav is the current Member of Parliament from Kannauj, which is close to the Yadav family bastion of Etawah-Mainpuri.  “…Our party will decide who will contest from where. Kannauj has been [Socialist Ram Manohar] Lohiaji’s constituency. That’s why I would wish that I contest from there,”  Mr. Yadav told reporters here on the 8th death anniversary of socialist Janeshwar Mishra.   The former Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister also said that his father and SP founder Mulayam Singh Yadav would contest from Mainpuri, as desired by him. In 2014, the senior Yadav had contested from two seats, the other bring Azamgarh, which he eventually decided to retain in a bid to expand party presence in Purvanchal.  That Mr. Akhilesh Yadav, who is currently an MLC in UP, has decided to contest the Lok Sabha is read as a move to galvanize cadre and express presence electorally, especially since his father Mulayam does not boast the political energy of his heydays.  Kannauj is being viewed as a strategic pick as it is considered a safe seat for him. Both Mr. Mulayam Singh Yadav and Mr. Akhilesh Yadav have been MPs from Kannauj in the past. There is also an attempt by the Yadav scion to shed off allegations of dynasty politics.  In September last year, when faced with questions on nepotism during a visit to Raipur, Mr. Akhilesh Yadav had indicated that his wife would not contest the 2019 Lok Sabha.  An MP from Kannauj from 2000 to 2012, Mr. Yadav had vacated his seat for his wife after he went on to become CM. His return to Kannauj could also mark the end of Ms. Dimple’s electoral stint as there is no other seat considered safe for her.  During the crisis in the Yadav family during the 2017 election, Ms. Dimple was seen standing strongly beside her husband and even actively campaigned for the party.  Ms. Dimple started her electoral career with a by-poll from Firozabad in 2009 but had to taste defeat at the hands of the Congress’ Raj Babbar. However, luck shine upon her soon enough as her husband was elected the CM of UP and had to vacate his seat Kannauj.  Ms. Dimple was elected MP from Kannauj unopposed.  In 2014, she was among the five Yadav family members of the SP who withstood the Modi wave, as she retained Kannauj. Despite securing a mammoth 4.89 lakh votes, Ms. Dimple beat the BJP’s Subrat Pathak by only 20,000 votes.   In the 2017 Assembly election, the SP lost a lot of ground in Kannauj district as well as the constituent assemblies of the Kannauj Lok Sabha seat. The SP won only one out of the five Assembly segments in Kannauj Lok Sabha constituency.  In 2009, when Mr. Akhilesh Yadav last contested from Kannauj he had a comfortable win securing 3.37 lakh votes.  Apart from Ram Manohar Lohia, Mulayam Singh and Akhilesh Yadav, the Kannauj seat has in the past also been held by former Delhi CM Sheila Dikshit. The SP had been winning the seat consecutively since 1998.last_img read more

Lucknow University censures three students

first_imgThree students of Lucknow University are facing administrative action a week after they showed black flags during a visit of Gujarat Chief Minister Vijay Rupani. The university has served show-cause notice on them, arguing that their action “not only affected the peace and order but also tarnished the university’s image.”The three students were among the seven arrested after they showed the black flag as Mr. Rupani’s convoy passed on October 15. They were protesting against the violence unleashed on migrant workers from Uttar Pradesh and Bihar in Gujarat. The university said the act showed the students were out to create an “atmosphere of fear and terror” on the campus. The students are Amar Yadav, B.A. first year; Anurag Pal, M.A. first year; and Mahendra Yadav, M.A. first year. They are also members of the students wing of the Samajwadi Party.Mahendra Yadav accused the university of being vindictive as the administration had taken action against the protesters. Moreover, the protest was staged 200 metres away from the university, near Hanuman Setu. “We were raising our voice against the violence faced by migrant workers in Gujarat,” he said. Mahendra Yadav was among the eight who spent almost a month in jail last year after showing the black flag to Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath. While the notice does not specify the quantum of punishment, it says their admission will be cancelled if they fail to respond to the notice.University spokesperson N.K. Pandey said the university would decide on the punishment on the basis of their explanations. He admitted that the incident did not take place on the campus, but the university’s disciplinary rules applied to them as they were still students.”If you are doing it (waving black flags), being a student and in front of the university, it does reflect on the image of the university on what we are doing academically. Are we producing these kinds of students,” Mr. Pandey asked.last_img read more

KSA planned to deport 250 Rohingyas to Bangladesh

first_imgScores of Rohingya Muslims sit on the floor of the Shumaisi detention centre in Jeddah, as Saudi authorities prepare to deport the men to Bangladesh. Photo: AljazeeraSaudi Arabia is planning to deport 250 Rohingya men to Bangladesh, in what will be the second forced deportation by Riyadh this year, Al Jazeera quoted an activist group as saying.Saudi Arabia is home to almost 300,000 Rohingya, according to Nay San Lwin, campaign coordinator for the Free Rohingya Coalition, who urged authorities to stop the deportations, adding that the men faced imprisonment in Bangladesh upon their arrival.”Majority of these Rohingya have residency permits and can live in Saudi Arabia legally,” Nay San Lwin told Al Jazeera.”But these detainees, who are being kept in the Shumaisi detention centre [in Jeddah], have not been treated like their fellow Rohingya. Instead, they are being treated like criminals.”According to one video obtained by Nay San Lwin, the Rohingya, most of whom arrived in the country several years ago, were being prepared to be taken to Jeddah international airport on Sunday where they would then board direct flights to Dhaka. He said the men were expected to be flown out either late on Sunday or Monday evening.Nay San Lwin added that many of the Rohingya entered Saudi Arabia after obtaining passports belonging to countries like Pakistan, Bangladesh, India and Nepal through smugglers via fake documents.Nay San Lwin added that many of the Rohingya entered Saudi Arabia after obtaining passports belonging to countries like Pakistan, Bangladesh, India and Nepal through smugglers via fake documents.Myanmar stripped the Rohingya of their citizenship in 1982, rendering them stateless.Under the 1982 Citizenship Law, the Rohingya were not recognised as one of the country’s 135 ethnic groups, restricting their rights to study, work, travel, marry, vote, practise their religion and access health services.Saudi Arabia stopped issuing residency permits to Rohingya who entered the country after 2011.Nay San Lwin said that several human rights activists had appealed to Saudi authorities over the past two years and that he had personally approached Saudi officials and diplomats to intervene.”When these Rohingyas arrive in Bangladesh, they could be jailed,” he said. “Saudi Arabia should stop these deportations and grant them residency permits like the other Rohingyas who arrived in the country before them.”Last year, Middle East Eye (MEE) reported that Rohingya detainees were being prepared for deportation shortly after Bangladeshi prime minister Sheikh Hasina visited Saudi Arabia. Some of the detainees held at the Shumaisi detention centre said they had lived in the kingdom their entire lives and had been sent to the facility after Saudi police found them without identification papers.Described as the “world’s most persecuted minority”, around one million Rohingya fled to neighbouring Bangladesh in late 2017 when the Myanmar army launched a brutal campaign against them. The UN accused government soldiers and local Buddhists of massacring families, burning hundreds of villages and carrying out mass gang rapes.Myanmar denies the allegations, saying security forces are battling armed rebels. However, many of the refugees housed in the cramped and unsanitary camps in Bangladesh said they feared returning to Myanmar without guaranteed rights such as citizenship, access to healthcare and freedom of movement.last_img read more

Plan to Get the Most Out of CES

first_img 5 min read Entrepreneur is on the ground at this year’s Consumer Electronics Show. Check back for highlights from the event as well as insights from thought leaders and innovators. The Consumer Electronics Show (CES) has become one of the most anticipated events of the year, drawing technology enthusiasts from around the globe. It’s also become one of the most derided. As the conference has grown, it has become unwieldy, to put it mildly. All of the sessions and crowds overwhelm professionals, leaving them unsure how to best use it as a networking opportunity or as an avenue to learn more about whatever field they’re in. Some executives have even opted to skip the event altogether in favor of smaller, less formal events where they can enjoy more one-on-one interaction.Instead of staying at home, though, savvy professionals redirect their approach to CES. With a little planning and effort, you can make lasting connections at this year’s event, just like you can at other, more manageably-sized events. Here are a few tips to help you get the most out of CES as it takes over Sin City.Set appointmentsWell in advance of the conference, spend time researching who else is going to be there. This includes reviewing the full schedule and paying close attention to the scheduled presenters. Watch your social media feeds for existing connections discussing the event. Experts recommend using CES as an opportunity to impress contacts you’ve been trying to keep happy or to win over for a while. People sometimes forget, but Las Vegas actually offers some of the best restaurants in the world, so wine and dine your contacts. It’s important to set these appointments and make reservations before you arrive, since many top establishments are fully booked during the days of the conference.Related: 5 Steps to Secure New Business at CES and Other Big EventsPlan your sessionsWith so many sessions and exhibits, it can be tempting to spend the entire conference taking in information. To ensure you get to see all of these things without sacrificing the goal of making or nurturing connections, plan the sessions and exhibits you want to see in advance and carve out a schedule that optimizes your networking time. This site lists most of the parties that will be happening in conjunction with CES. Be sure to mix these events into your time at CES and even when you’re attending sessions, focus on the connections you can make in addition to the information you can learn.Related: CES Has Become an Innovator’s Pre-Crowdfunding Launch PadBe boldCES isn’t the time to be shy. Force yourself to interact with others, introducing yourself at every opportunity. Even the person seated next to you on the plane on the way to the event could be a valuable potential contact. Practice your introduction ahead of time and make sure it properly conveys your message. You likely want to sell your business rather than yourself, so you should have your elevator pitch perfected before you leave.Related: A Tech Entrepreneur’s Insider Tips for Exhibiting at CESListenOne of the biggest mistakes you can make at any networking event is spending all of your time talking and no time at all listening. If nobody’s listening, everyone’s networking efforts are wasted. When you let people talk, you learn more about potential business partners who can help you. Also, consider that people are naturally drawn to those who show genuine interest in who they are and what they do. Instead of focusing on your sales pitch, come up with some questions to ask that will get the other person talking. The pressure will then be taken off of you to talk. Once you get to know the person a little and you both feel more comfortable, you can bring up your business. They may even bring it up for you!Related: Why Many Tech Execs Are Skipping the Consumer Electronics ShowFollow UpAll of those connections you make will be useless if you don’t translate them into a post-CES relationship. In the days after you return home, send a quick email to follow up on your introduction. If you recall specifics of your conversation with a particular contact, mention those in the email, as well. Follow each contact on social media and make a note to follow up again in a few weeks if you don’t get a response. You may not form lasting connections with everyone you meet, but by following up, you’ll likely at least add a few new people to your professional network.Oh CES. Just the thought of you brings up images of long taxi lines, incredibly crowded showroom floors, and nights with too many parties for any one person to actually attend. It may have gotten too big for its own good, but it does indeed bring prime opportunities for networking with professionals across many industries. Before arriving in Vegas though, it’s important to plan what you’ll do to ensure you get the most out of your attendance. Otherwise, you may find you’ve spent several days learning about tech products with not much benefit to your own business’s growth. Opinions expressed by Entrepreneur contributors are their own.
