Apple Proposes 5 New Emoji Professions

first_img 2 min read –shares 2019 Entrepreneur 360 List Contributing Writer Add to Queue Apple has submitted a proposal to Unicode to add five new emoji professions, including an artist, firefighter, pilot, astronaut and judge. The renderings, published by Unicode and discovered by Emojipedia, include men and women in each role for a total of 10 new emoji options. Emoji have become increasingly important for mobile users. But in order for them to become universally accepted by all services and platforms, they need to be approved by Unicode, a consortium made up of some of the world’s largest companies, including Apple, Google and others.Unicode itself is short for universal character encoding and is maintained by the Consortium. It’s the standard by which text data is transmitted over technology.”Unicode covers all the characters for all the writing systems of the world, modern and ancient,” the Consortium says. “It also includes technical symbols, punctuations and many other characters used in writing text. The Unicode Standard is intended to support the needs of all types of users, whether in business or academia, using mainstream or minority scripts.”Once emoji are submitted to the Consortium, they are either accepted or denied. If accepted, they become part of Unicode and therefore capable of being interpreted by the billions of devices worldwide that use it. How VR Holograms Can Train Everyone From Hairdressers to Astronauts

first_imgVirtual Reality January 3, 2017 Sophia Stuart Learn how to successfully navigate family business dynamics and build businesses that excel. –shares This story originally appeared on PCMag Wouldn’t it have been amazing to sing backup for Bowie, sit in the front row of a lecture by Einstein, visit the lab with Marie Curie or gaze into outer space with Buzz Aldrin?Sadly, the first three are no longer with us, but Buzz is and he’s been digitized as a volumetric hologram by VR/AR startup 8i so he’s future-proofed for eternity.8i started in New Zealand and has several staffers, including co-founder and CTO Eugene d’Eon, who worked with Lord of the Rings director Peter Jackson at Weta Digital. 8i recently opened an L.A. offshoot, in a temporary space on a soundstage at Culver Studios (where Orson Welles’s Citizen Kane and the 1960’s-era Batman TV show were both filmed) while its new office is being constructed. PCMag met up with CEO Linc Gasking — who sold one of his earlier startups, countingdown.com, to Dreamworks — to get a demo and find out what’s on the slate for 2017.Unlike many VR houses, 8i has an actual business model and clients, including NASA and Time Inc. It just released a high-profile VR digitization of Matrix Academy, an educational tool for hairdressers, for L’Oréal. The company trained more than 2 million hairdressers globally in 2015, but with the new VR tool, student numbers will increase exponentially. The off-the-shelf rig 8i used for the Matrix project has “40 Point Grey cameras, with Sony CMOS sensors, pointing in, rather than out,” Gasking said. “The cameras capture a multitude of angles simultaneously which are sent to the cloud for processing using 8i’s patent-pending software, to create a volumetric hologram.”Volumetric VR means “you’re free to move around the person you’re watching as if you’re in the same room, and it has presence which tricks your mind into thinking that you really are there,” he said, which heightens “the emotional connection far beyond the limited experience of 360 video.”Rachel Weiss, VP of Innovation and Entrepreneurship at L’Oréal, told PCMag she saw 8i’s demo at CES 2016 and was instantly taken with the tech.”We recognized early on that VR could have a profound impact on the highly visual and community-driven beauty industry and wanted to create an experience that was incredibly lifelike. After a few minutes testing the experience [at CES], we knew immediately they were the right partner for us.”The one technical challenge along the way has been rendering hair, which is one of the hardest aspects to get right in the 3D reconstruction of humans,” she said. “8i has worked closely with us to tackle this issue and we’re looking forward to bringing the full experience to market in 2017.”Gasking pointed out that the new VR teaching tool will enable top stylists to cut down on physical travel, as well as reach more potential students worldwide, pretty much instantly. “You can get up close and actually see what’s happening without having to physically be there. The other thing that’s important is it’s an actual person — it’s not a computer-generated figure — it feels real, because it is.”I can attest to this. When I did the demo, there was something in my brain that wouldn’t let me walk through the hologram, even though, logically, I knew it was digital. It was most curious. Here’s what happened: I put on the HTC Vive and headphones. Suddenly, a Matrix stylist materialized, welcomed me and explained the day’s tasks. I quickly took a full 360-degree scan of the room and the illusion was complete. My head believed it was inside a hair salon. We cut — seamlessly, as if I’d done a time lapse body jump — to another room and I peered up close, watching the stylist explain flat-iron techniques on a hair model. You can see how students will find this VR tool entirely normal pretty soon.On the soundstage, we got a sneak peek at some more evolved high-end holograms for proof-of-concept “wow” pitches, including examples from the R&D lab in New Zealand of upcoming holograms. It’s also too early to talk about specifics, but communications chief Amy Sezak indicated 8i will put out a commercial version of its software sometime in 2017.What’s really interesting about 8i is that, unlike many other companies, it has flipped the digital fabrication process. Instead of starting with motion capture and building a digital avatar from that framework, it went the other way, most noticeably with the recent project for Time magazine with Buzz Aldrin, who recorded messages for scientists training for Mars missions.Six people lived at a University of Hawaii Mars simulation site from August 2015 to August 2016 in order to study the effects of long-term isolation. They received holographic recordings of Aldrin and vocal artist/comedian Reggie Watts, “which when viewed in virtual reality, simulate true presence and could help mitigate the feeling of isolation,” according to 8i.Those recordings will be released to the public in early 2017 as part of the Time Live VR project. Those with Google Cardboard or VR headsets like Gear VR, Oculus Rift and HTC Vive can download the app and experience Aldrin and Watts in VR.”As with the Buzz Aldrin example, we are focused on getting the VR industry to take a leap over the ‘uncanny valley,'” Gasking said.8i cannot confirm or deny this, but the reason a move to L.A. must have made sense, is that Hollywood studios are looking to digitize their movie stars for eternity. Bearing in mind his company’s technology now makes this possible, which important figure from history does Gasking wish he could still interact with?”I’d really like to have heard first-hand from New Zealander Edmund Hillary about his experiences climbing Everest, that’s for sure,” he told PCMag.Wouldn’t it be brilliant, rather than purchasing an audiobook and listening to it on a digital device, if one could rent a hologram of Douglas Adams, who would sit on the other end of the sofa and read those immortal lines: “Far out in the uncharted backwaters of the unfashionable end of the Western Spiral arm of the Galaxy.”Adams is no longer with us either, but many geek-favored writers are. Let’s hope they are booked into the 8i soundstage by their publishers soon. Happy World Backup Day And What the Heck Is World Backup Day

first_img Happy World Backup Day! And What the Heck Is World Backup Day? –shares 4 min read This story originally appeared on PCMag If you work in technology, you may have heard about World Backup Day. Founded in 2011, World Backup Day was designed by Ismail Jadun, a digital strategy and research consultant, to boost awareness for businesses and individuals that may not recognize the importance of regular data backups. The goal, according to the World Backup Day website, is to use March 31 as the date each year to reach those who have never backed up their data, and even people who might not have ever even heard about data backup.”World Backup Day started out when someone on Reddit lost their hard drive and wished someone had reminded them to back up,” said Jadun. “I thought it was a wonderful idea … it’s wonderful to see people and schools around the world promoting the importance of backing up our data.”One of those companies promoting World Backup Day is Datacastle, an analytics and endpoint protection services company. President and CEO Ron Faith said his company endorses the new occasion because he often finds that small businesses don’t truly understand the threats from ransomware, data loss and data breaches. “It is important for small businesses to be honest with themselves that they don’t know what data is on all their company laptops, tablets and smartphones,” he said. What you need to know about data lossDon’t think of data loss as something that only happens to massive companies or to individual employees who drop phones in swimming pools. Jadun and Faith want you to know that any company or individual can fall victim to data loss and theft. Business Email Compromise (BEC) attacks are incredibly simple ways that hackers target companies, without having a massive army of coders on their side. An excellent example of a BEC attack is a fraudulent email sent from someone pretending to be the company’s CEO to the company’s human resources (HR) manager. Without realizing that he or she is being scammed, an HR manager willingly sends personal employee data to the scammers. Since 2013, more than 7,000 of these attacks have occurred, totaling losses exceeding $740 million according to FBI data. Not protecting your company’s data can be a costly decision. The average global cost per stolen confidential record in 2016 rose from $154 to $158. Last year, there were 38 percent more attacks on companies than there were in the previous year, and most attacks stay dormant within a company’s system for over 140 days before the company even realizes they’ve been infiltrated. Attacks are happening more often, they’re more sophisticated and they’re becoming more and more expensive for businesses. Or, as Faith said, the cost to the company’s reputation “is far greater from an embarrassing data loss or data breach incident than the cost of most [backup and protection] solutions.”How to stay safeFaith advised businesses to create a simple, company-wide, data protection policy that will automatically back up the endpoint data to the cloud. He said the solution “should be friction-free for the employees and not really require the employees to do anything.” If your company doesn’t have the resources to dedicate to a corporate-wide backup, Faith said companies should start with the executives’ laptops. “It is a smaller group with the most sensitive data. This enables the executives to lead by example on protecting endpoint data,” he said.Jadun said it is crucial for companies to audit the data they produce. This includes customer data, product data, HR data and sales data, among many other examples. By doing this, companies can fully understand the stakes of any data loss incident. Once you’ve audited your data, he advised companies to determine the potential ways data could be lost and then create a data protection plan to protect those assets.”Depending on how much downtime your organization can handle, you can then set about looking at various data protection and backup solutions. Your business should strongly consider creating local backups as well as backups in an offsite location. Then, go about setting up protocols to both automatically back up and test those restore regularly.” Add to Queue Next Article If you haven’t secured your data yet, then take the World Backup Day pledge today. Elon Musk Found Out That 90 Million Isnt Too Much to Pay

first_img Apply Now » 3 min read Nina Zipkin While the payload of SpaceX’s inaugural test flight of the Falcon Heavy Rocket — Elon Musk’s red Tesla roadster carrying a dummy outfitted in a spacesuit — was initially headed for Mars’s orbit, the rocket’s third burn was so effective that the vehicle kept going to the asteroid belt in between the red planet and Jupiter.Third burn successful. Exceeded Mars orbit and kept going to the Asteroid Belt. pic.twitter.com/bKhRN73WHF— Elon Musk (@elonmusk) February 7, 2018It seems that even though the trajectory is not what was planned, the vehicle, which was outfitted with a special message for anyone who might come across it — “Made on Earth by humans” — the payload could end up paying off back on its home planet.Sandy Rubinstein, the CEO of DXagency, tells Entrepreneur that the idea to have a Tesla vehicle be the payload was a brilliant one. “The amount of web traffic [and] consumer excitement from the images of the vehicle ascending and the amount of earned media he garnered from news outlets all over the world will absolutely exceed the costs of the endeavor,” Rubinstein says. “The stock is up today and the forecast is tremendously positive. This stunt will continue to pay dividends to Tesla for years to come.”Deb Gabor, the CEO of SOL Marketing, says that while it is tough to calculate, the financial value of the stunt would likely be less than the $90 million Musk spent. But the move was incredibly valuable nonetheless from a brand awareness perspective.Related: Elon Musk and SpaceX Just Made History With Successful Falcon Heavy Launch”With this event, Musk harnessed an opportunity to express his two flagship brands’ beliefs and values through the clever narrative of ‘the car that went to space,’ capturing his audience’s imagination and indelibly imprinting on their hearts,” Gabor says. “Brand strategies like this highlight the magic of Tesla’s ‘no-marketing’ marketing strategy that’s propelled them to brand leadership without investing significant dollars in advertising.”While the reach for the stars was an inventive one from the perspective of trying to engender some goodwill, the company is still struggling. The question remains of how safe Tesla car factories are for employees and how effectively and fairly the company handles the aftermath of on-the-job injuries. And while Tesla’s stock was up by 3 percent on Wednesday morning ahead of the release of its 2017 fourth quarter earnings, the company is still dogged by not meeting its production goals for the Model 3, making only half the number of cars that it was expected to manufacture in December. The SpaceX launch of the Tesla payload was a success, but the car company still has struggles to work through. 2019 Entrepreneur 360 List –shares Entrepreneur Staff Staff Writer. Folláin Preserves hires Beatson Clark to rebrand glass packaging

first_imgFolláin Preserves hires Beatson Clark to rebrand glass packagingPosted By: Jules Scullyon: April 12, 2019In: Food, Glass, Industries, PackagingPrintEmailIrish food producer Folláin Preserves intends to boost sales abroad after working with Beatson Clark to rebrand its glass packaging. County Cork-based Folláin predominantly sells its products into the Irish market but aims to expand in Europe, and felt the time had come to replace its standard glass jar with something more premium in look and feel.Beatson Clark collaborated with Folláin’s marketing team to design and produce a new 330ml curved jar, which is now used for the firm’s portfolio of marmalades, jams, pickles and relishes.Laura Hewson, marketing and sales manager at Folláin Preserves, said: “We are a premium brand, and we wanted our packaging to reflect that with something unique to us. The standard jar we were using didn’t represent the quality of the contents within. The new 330ml jar is used for Folláin’s range of marmalades, jams, pickles, and relishes.“Our aim was to create a vintage and old-fashioned-style jar, which would become a collectable, encouraging customers to reuse and recycle them. With support from the team at Beatson Clark, we have managed to achieve just that.”The jar has a deep twist-off neck and has been finished with a simple and clean-looking label. Dean Arey, Beatson Clark’s design engineer, added: “Rebrands of this size are often critical to the development of a brand, so it was important for us to achieve a design which Folláin felt would elevate their position in the European market.”“With a major packaging overhaul of this size, developing the concept is as critical as the quality of the finished product. We have found that many companies of Folláin’s size approach us as their packaging partner for rebrands because we have design and manufacture capabilities in house and are able to work with them on every aspect of the project over the medium and long term.”Share with your network: Tags: Beatson ClarkFolláin PreservesIrelandUKlast_img read more

PayPal to Drop Purchase Protection for Crowdfunding Projects

first_img This story originally appeared on Fortune Magazine Add to Queue Image credit: Jeff Chiu — AP PayPal Next Article 2 min read PayPal to Drop Purchase Protection for Crowdfunding Projects May 9, 2016 –shares David Z. Morris Effective June 25, PayPal will drop Purchase Protection coverage for backers of crowdfunded projects, the Verge reports. The move comes as awareness of the risks of crowdfunding grows, but while less protection may sound like a bad thing for platforms like Kickstarter, the change may actually help prevent a repeat of some recent frustrating episodes.Last year, Kickstarter funded a University of Pennsylvania study that found 9 percent of projects on the platform failed to deliver rewards. They also commissioned reporter Mark Harris to do a deep dive into one of the most high-profile failed projects, the Zano drone. More recently, the Coolest Cooler project ran out of cash before delivering its product to all backers. But while failed projects frustrate everyone, the Zano case shows how PayPal’s Purchase Protection actually added to the heartache. As Harris reported, Torquing Group, the creator of the Zano, did ship a few hundred of the drones before entering liquidation in failure. But they went to backers who pledged directly through Torquing’s website using PayPal, not to Kickstarter backers. The reason was PayPal’s policy of holding pre-order payments until a product is delivered, to back up its Purchase Protection service. That means that projects offering add-ons or preorders outside of Kickstarter found themselves financially pressured to send products to those customers first. That understandably enraged many who pledged through Kickstarter — which, importantly, does not allow PayPal payments, and expects backers to shoulder all the risk for failed projects.PayPal’s new policy might help avoid similar foulups in the future, by releasing funds to projects more quickly, and making it easier for projects to serve early Kickstarter backers first. If that leads to higher overall satisfaction for Kickstarter funders, it would be a boon to the crowdfunding model at a moment when it’s starting to show cracks.last_img read more

Apple Cracking Down on Abandoned Apps

first_img 3 min read This story originally appeared on PCMag Apple September 2, 2016 Apple is looking to do a little cleaning of the App Store, mainly to remove abandoned apps, apps that use giant descriptions as their titles and those that haven’t been tweaked to work with modern Apple hardware. The company sent an email to its large developer community today to go over its new pruning procedure, which officially kicks off on Sept. 7.”Quality is extremely important to us. We know that many of you work hard to build innovative apps and update your apps on the App Store with new content and features. However, there are also apps on the App Store that no longer function as intended or follow current review guidelines, and others which have not been supported with compatibility updates for a long time. We are implementing an ongoing process of evaluating apps for these issues, notifying their developers and removing problematic and abandoned apps from the App Store,” reads Apple’s message. According to Apple, any app in any category could be affected if it runs afoul of the company’s current guidelines. If you’re an app developer and your app has been flagged, Apple will ask you to make changes if you want the app to stay on the App Store. There’s one special exception, though. If your app crashes when Apple’s testers try to use it, it’s going to be pulled from the App Store immediately. If you have significant changes to make in order to keep your app in compliance with Apple’s guidelines (and running successfully on its latest devices), you might be in for some trouble, however. App developers will have 30 days from the notification to bring their apps into compliance or else the offending app will be pulled from the App Store until these changes are made. That doesn’t delete the app from your developer account, however, and users will still be able to access it if they’ve already downloaded it to their devices.”They will experience no interruption to services and will still be able to buy in-app purchases. However, we recommend that you update your app as soon as possible to reinstate it on the App Store and ensure that it remains functional and engaging for new and existing customers,” Apple said.As for the names aspect, Apple is now enforcing a 50-character limit for all app titles. And developers only have themselves to blame for that — at least, the ones trying to game Apple’s search results by using unwieldy names for their apps.”Search is one of the most frequently used methods for customers to discover and download apps from the App Store. In hopes of influencing search results, some developers have used extremely long app names which include descriptions and terms not directly related to their app. These long names are not fully displayed on the App Store and provide no user value. App names you submit in iTunes Connect for new apps and updates will now be limited to no longer than 50 characters,” reads Apple’s announcement. General Mills posts 21 sales rise thanks to its cereal brands

first_imgGeneral Mills posts 2.1% sales rise thanks to its cereal brandsPosted By: News Deskon: December 20, 2017In: Business, Financial, Food, IndustriesPrintEmailGeneral Mills has posted a net sales increase of 2.1% in its second-quarter results thanks to a strong performance of its cereal and snack brands such as Cinnamon Toast Crunch and Nature Valley.Reaching $4.2 billion in the three months to November 2017, the rise marks the company’s first quarterly increase since May 2015.Operating profit, however, was down 5% to $730 million, which is said to be “due to lower gross margins partially offset by higher net sales”.The positive results have led General Mills to update its full-year fiscal 2018 targets, with organic net sales expected to be between flat and down 1%, above the previous range of a decline of 1-2%. The updated target represents a 300-400 basis point improvement over fiscal 2017 results.Earlier in the year, General Mills CEO Jeff Harmening, who has also become company chairman, pledged to “move with urgency in fiscal 2018 to meaningfully improve our net sales”. Following the latest figures, he said he was pleased with the breadth of the top-line improvement across the company’s product platforms and geographies.“We’re executing better, with stronger innovation, more effective brand building, and better merchandising, leading to market share gains in the majority of our key global platforms,” he said. “I’m also pleased that we delivered top-line growth in absolute terms.General Mills CEO Jeff Harmening“At the same time, we still have important work to do to achieve our full-year goals.  Our profit was down in the first half, but I’m confident we will deliver profit growth in the second half.  With two quarters behind us and good visibility to the impact of our strong second-half plans, we’re raising our 2018 organic sales guidance and maintaining our outlook for profit and EPS.“I’m encouraged by the step that fiscal 2018 represents in our effort to return our business to consistent top- and bottom-line growth for the long term.”In the US, yogurt sales were up on the previous quarter thanks to the introduction of Oui by Yoplait and Yoplait Mix-Ins. Meanwhile In the company’s convenience and foodservice sector, net sales were up 5% to $512 million, driven by growth in frozen meals, cereals and snacks. Finally, second-quarter sales in Europe and Australia were up 7% and in Asia and Latin America up by 2%.For fiscal 2018, General Mills has now identified four growth priorities: growing cereal globally; improving US yogurt through innovation; investing in differential growth opportunities including Häagen-Dazs ice cream, snack bars, Old El Paso Mexican food, and its portfolio of natural and organic food brands; and managing its foundation brands.By directing resources toward these global priorities, General Mills said it expects to drive a “significant improvement in its organic net sales trends in fiscal 2018, which represents an important step in returning the business to consistent organic net sales growth”.Share with your network: Tags: Cinnamon Toast CrunchGeneral MillsNature ValleyYoplaitlast_img read more

Health minister Aurelijus Veryga hopes other companies will join the agreement in the future.Speaking to the Baltic News Service about a proposed sugar tax, he said:  “The goal of the taxes, which were not proposed by the government but were in advance discussed in the society, was in essence what we did with today’s agreements – lower content of sugar in food products.“The countries that went this way had the same objective – producers that did not want to raise prices for their products reduced the content of sugar.“I am glad that we in Lithuania can demonstrate a different way of solving this through an agreement with producers to do the same without any taxes.”The Lithuanian government said that people in the country consume 40% more salt, 39% more fat and 22% more sugar than is recommended by the World Health Organisation.According to Mindaugas Snarskis, the chairman of the board of the Lithuanian Food Industry, producers are faced with the difficult task of providing the most favourable products for health, while preserving their flavour characteristics and avoiding significant changes in prices. He said: “We are pleased that we are invited to become partners in this initiative because we believe that a partnership between business and government is one of the most important conditions for achieving successful results.”The UK, Ireland, the Philippines, South Africa and Estonia are due to implement sugar taxes this year.Share with your network: Tags: LithuaniaSugar taxlast_img read more

Hexagons CADWorx makes the ideal solution for plant design

first_imgThe complete engineering workflow for the food & beverage industry The population of the world is currently 7.6 billion people. It is predicted to reach 8.6 billion in 2030. As a result, the need for more food and beverage plants will continue to grow at a staggering rate. Food & Beverage plants represent a huge corporate investment that requires rigorous solutions to meet operational challenges. The obvious need for sanitary conditions within the food and beverage plant environment dictates that the industry-specific standards and specifications must be adhered to during plant design, construction and operations. Report Reply Facebook Here’s our report from Oliver Laughland and Lois Beckett in Washington: Show 6 more replies Report Share on Facebook Share on Twitter Report Hundreds of thousands of people have gathered in Washington to call for tighter gun laws following the massacre at a high school in Parkland, Florida, last month. The rally was led by young activists from Parkland and across the country, in an array of powerful and composed speeches from young people from diverse backgrounds. The White House praised the demonstrators for exercising their right to free speech, but Donald Trump himself was silent at the time of writing, seeming to spend much of the day at his golf club in Florida.Barack Obama tweeted: “Michelle and I are so inspired by all the young people who made today’s marches happen. Keep at it. You’re leading us forward.”Protesters in Washington formed a sea of people along Pennsylvania Avenue, while demonstrators also gathered in Parkland, New York City, San Francisco, and in cities around the world.Students from the school newspaper at Marjory Stoneman Douglas, where the February massacre took place, attended the march as special correspondents for the Guardian and have been guest-editing the Guardian US website since yesterday. The rallies are aiming to persuade Congress to tighten the US’s notoriously lax firearm laws, which have made gun massacres a regular part of American life.Emma Gonzalez, one of the best-known Parkland student activists, led the crowd in 6min 20secs of silence to symbolise the amount of time it took the gunman, Nikolas Cruz, to commit the 17 murders. More importantly the vast majority of guns are concentrated in the hands of people you would want the least to have them. There is nothing moderate or rational about an individual having an arsenal of 20+ weapons at home. The gun nuts all have been praying for the same prophecy…that the government will one day come for their guns and they will need to defend themselves with them. They are a group of very dangerous, very paranoid narrow minded people who will happily start a civil war in which they are the ‘victims’ of bureaucracy(and common sense). More importantly they have successfully managed to paint an image that gun massacres are as inevitable in the American landscape as tornados are on the Great Plains. The debate is centered on more protection against guns not actually really on diminishing them. See through back packs, metal detectors and security guards have already been normalised into the school landscape. They will sooner build moates then reduce guns at school. If legislation was to be successfully pushed forward, you can be sure that the most rabid gun owners will spring into instant rebellion. This is how far the garden path to insanity the US is down. A Sandy Hook elementary graduate, Tommy Murray, followed Soto. Murray said he was in sixth grade at the school when the shooting occurred. Project Management Tools Critical for Marketing Teams Success

first_imgProject Management Tools Critical for Marketing Teams’ Success PRNewswireMay 8, 2019, 7:09 pmMay 8, 2019 David Lenzenmarketing initiativesMarketing TechnologyMetaCommunicationsNewsProject Management Previous ArticleBrainshark Wins in The American Business Awards for 8th Year in a RowNext ArticleAudio Visual Solutions Company, IVCi, Explains How Companies Can Leverage Video Walls to Increase Room Functionality Study Identifies What Marketing Teams Want (And Don’t Care About) When It Comes to Productivity Whether they’re part of a small team wearing multiple hats or a large, distributed department serving the needs of a Fortune 500 brand,  marketers are increasingly relying on project management (PM) solutions to help them deliver more work faster. But what do these marketers value most when it’s time to invest in a new tool? A research study conducted by MetaCommunications in partnership with Drive Research under the direction of Thomas Gruca, Henry B. Tippie Research Professor of Marketing at the University of Iowa, assessed those preferences and needs regarding marketing project management software. Some 400 in-house marketers and creatives reported their use of digital tools to create and manage their work. The research assessed the features and functionalities that teams prioritize in order to deliver a wide variety of marketing initiatives and drive project results. Every marketer surveyed reported using a project management tool on daily, weekly or monthly basis. The study answers some key questions:Which roles use work management tools the most? Jack-of-all-trades marketing managers are the power users, outpacing project coordinators or project managers. What activities do marketing teams rely on these tools to execute?  High-volume, real-time activities are tops. Digital marketing and social media dominate, while few teams mix project management and account management. What features do teams value most and least in potential project management tools?  Regardless of team size, everyone is looking for clear workflows and organized project details. When it comes to keeping tabs on employee productivity, marketing leaders are decidedly uninterested in playing Big Brother. The focus was on overall team outputs so the ability to measure individual performance and tracking staff times were the least in-demand.Marketing Technology News: Demandbase ABM Ecosystem Launches to Connect Technology, Software and Data Providers for Better ABM Execution“The study results not only outline needs for productivity and workflow management solutions for marketing teams,” says David Lenzen, Chief Sales and Marketing Officer for MetaCommunications, “but the information has value for marketing teams that are selecting platforms for their own organization or those looking to upgrade a current system. Often the decision is made by a person in a leadership role that may value one functionality over others.”While both small and large marketing teams rely on project management tools to manage their workload, the impetus for turning to technology to get a grip on their workflows differs by team size.“Bigger teams need collaboration tools because the work is spread out among more people. Smaller teams have different needs because often team members are juggling more than one role. Having project management that is intuitive rather than cumbersome is important,” says Gruca.“Big or small, teams are definitely challenged by the number of often separate tools required to get the best result. Frustration comes when managing the work gets in the way of actually doing the work,” he adds.Marketing Technology News: Open Source SuiteCRM by SalesAgility Takes Aim at Salesforce With New Cloud Hosting ServiceLenzen says marketing team members appreciate having access to tools that complement each other, allowing them to contribute more effectively, efficiently and, ultimately, creatively. This is particularly the case when dealing with marketing teams with more than ten people. As marketing teams become larger, clear procedures and effective collaboration become more important. In contrast, the ability to measure individual and financial performance becomes less important.“There is a priority gap between marketing team leaders and team members as well. We found that senior marketing leaders placed more importance on being able to measure return on marketing activities and creating more time for creative work than more junior team members who were more focused on making their workdays more organized and productive” says Lenzen.Marketing Technology News: New Soda Study Reveals Significant Increase in Customer Personalization Budgets Despite Lag in Capabilitieslast_img read more
